How to Reach the Ultimate Life Balance in 8 Steps
By Anastasiya G
When you think about life balance, what is the first thought that enters your mind? I guess you will immediately start thinking about dividing your life into equal areas (family, self, work and money, health) and then splitting your precious time between these parts of your life. If this is your approach to life balance then I must regrettably say that it won't work.
No matter how much you try to split your time and energy equally between different parts of your life you won't be able to succeed. You will only get stressed and feel that you have no control at all over your life.
Why is it happening?
Your life is always filled with unexpected things that change your plans and your goals. Your child got sick and you can't get to the gym. Your boss offered you a promotion that you just cannot turn down that is why you forget about your hobbies and free time. Your favorite relatives are coming to see you and you forgo your healthy habits and indulge in buffalo wings, chips and pizza instead of salads and well-balanced meals. You know better than me that there is always something going on that pushes your life out of balance.
Life is not a mathematical equation. You cannot just divide, subtract or multiply your life following an easy 2+2=4 principle. Some tasks in your life might weigh like 2 but others would have the value of 10 or even 100. Life is more difficult than mathematics and a lot of times it does not follow any rules or logic.
Living a balanced life becomes just one more task on your to-do list. You start feeling stressed out when this task does not get completed and this feeling of frustration undermines all your efforts of being in balance.
After saying all this I want to give you a few ideas that can help you live a life of balance, harmony and happiness.
Set priorities. Priorities are the key when it comes to making choices in life. When you set priorities in your life you create the structural framework of your life. Later on you can start adding small pieces that will fill gaps between the frames and make your life more enjoyable. However, you can't add small things first because your entire life will fall apart. It's important to know what priorities are your framework and to organize your life around them. Most people will have to focus around the following priorities in life: family, career, health, interests and passions, spiritual needs and money. You might add your own priorities to this list. Ask yourself "What can't I live without even one day? What can't I be happy without?" This will be your #1 priority. Ask yourself the same questions until you have figured out the order of priorities in your life.
Be mindful. If you practice mindfulness you will be able to see more things around you. You will notice how easy it is to be happy just by going outside. You will understand which of your choices and tasks are really important ones and which ones aren't. Mindfulness will bring serenity and peacefulness into your life, the essential components of life balance.
Simplify. If you have too many tasks in your schedule, if you are pursuing too many goals then your life becomes too cluttered. Eliminate any activities that are not essential to you (watching TV or spending hours on Facebook) and look realistically at your goals. Set new goals only after the current ones are already achieved.
Learn patience. Life balance is impossible without patience. By learning to be patient in life you will slow down the pace of your life and realize that not everything must be instant. Patience is a great quality that can help you finally reach your goals and treat life wisely.
Always ask yourself questions. In order to know answers you must first ask questions. Make it a rule to ask yourself "How am I feeling today? What makes me feel down or happy today? What am I grateful for? What would I like to change? How can I make this day better?" These questions will let you connect with your inner self and you will be able to hear your inner voice. Your inner voice will show you what you need in order to bring your life in balance.
Avoid being fixed on one thing. No matter how much you love your work or your family you can't lose yourself in those activities. Life balance is all about harmony and peace; it is about taking the most from life and making your life meaningful and happy. When you feel that your life becomes too one-sided make a conscious effort to stop whatever you are doing and do something completely different. Exercise, talk to a friend, work in the yard, go to the movies, play with kids, go on a romantic date with your significant other... Even when you feel that you still have a lot to do before you can relax, just stop everything and enjoy your life.
Be in the nature. Nature has a magical power to quite our mind and boost our happiness. Try to spend as much time as possible outside. Make it a habit to go for a walk after a stressful day at work. Take your family on a picnic or just sit in your yard and think about how blessed you are to be alive on this planet.
Practice gratitude and positive attitude. Gratitude and positive attitude go hand in hand together and they will ensure that your life balance is truly effortless. Look at the bright side of any situation, be grateful for everything you have in life and be positive about your projects and goals. This attitude is the main ingredient of life balance.
