Evaluate Yourself and Build Your Wheel of Life

By Jerry Ryan  |

Are you living a life that you desire or are you living a life that was designed for you by somebody else? Do your actions move you in the direction that you want to go? When you have a mismatch, your life goes nowhere. Taking a closer look at all of the things that are a part of your life can help you make sure that your thoughts, feelings, and behavior are consistent with each other and not conflicting with your current needs or your long-term goals.

Think of your life as a wheel with several spokes coming from the center. Each spoke represents a segment of your life. For example, one spoke is your family, another one is your career, yet another is your physical health. Sometimes, your wheel can be unbalanced and cause a rather uncomfortable, bumpy ride. Therefore, it is important that all of your spokes are the right size and that each spoke is strong and securely held in place by both the center and the surrounding wheel.

Spiritual

This spoke relates to your connection to something greater than yourself. There is no particular religion or deity required. Each person builds this spoke through their personal beliefs. The key is to acknowledge your connection to all people and all things. We are all made from the same energy and elements, breathe the same air, and live on the same planet. As a result of this connection, everything you do impacts everyone and everything everywhere. The effect can be positive or negative depending on your intentions and choices. Strive to have all your thoughts, words, and actions targeted toward the greatest good for all involved. Work on this spoke first because it is the main support when other spokes loosen, weaken, or become broken.

Family

As a child, you get your first experience of how a relationship with another person works. You gain this knowledge through your interaction with family members. You use this family spoke as a guideline for every other relationship that you have with the people in your wheel of life. Strengthen this spoke by developing peaceful, loving relationships with your family. Having a strong, well-connected spoke with family can help when the outside world places a few bumps in the road.

Physical

Without a strong spoke of physical health, many other spokes will weaken. Poor health affects the dynamics of relationships with family and friends. It can cause loss of time in schooling, loss of income, and even loss of contact with other people. Strengthen this spoke by eating properly, drinking plenty of water, taking a multivitamin supplement, exercising at least three times a week, and getting enough rest every day. Research has shown that 80-90% of illnesses are related to diet and lifestyle. Review your habits to see if they are steering you off course.

Career and Business

This spoke of your wheel of life encompasses your calling in life, your life's mission. Working at a job that doesn't spark your inner flame will bend this spoke drastically. Over time, the stress placed on you by constantly clocking in without a heartfelt purpose will make the daily ride uncomfortable. Check this spoke to determine whether you are following your life's map. It will increase the ability to roll smoothly through life.

Financial

Having good finances will determine whether your spokes are solid gold or aluminum. A strong financial spoke has a storehouse for an entire emergency wheel along with a daily maintenance plan for keeping the wheel in good repair and moving forward. Tighten this spoke by looking for ways to lighten your financial load or opportunities to increase your finds for the ride.

Educational

Knowledge is one of the more vital spokes in your wheel. Without it, you will have difficulty in reading your road map, knowing where to change direction, or even fixing a bent or weakened spoke. Learning something new every day strengthens this spoke. Learning about yourself strengthens them all.

Social

This spoke provides external strength and support woven around your friends and co-workers. No wheel is complete with only one or two spokes. The true strength comes from the interweaving of many spokes. A strong social spoke comes from choosing your friends wisely. Friends are not only the links between spokes; they are the pump that fills your life's wheel to the right level.

Don't go rolling down the road of life on a wheel with uneven spokes. Tighten your spokes so your life is well-rounded and strong enough to handle the potholes on the way.
